Professionals in every sector of the arts face mental health challenges – whether they are artists or arts administrators. In observance of World Mental Health Day, we gathered mental health resources specifically for artists and arts nonprofit workers: mental health insurance coverage support, financial assistance, support groups, trainings, and more.
Performing arts mental health resources
- Entertainment Community Fund’s Support Groups (free, online) for entertainment and performing arts professionals, divided into multiple subgroups by age, social group affiliations, and types of challenges professionals experience.
- United Hospital Fund Guidebook is aimed at helping theater workers and performing arts professionals navigate health insurance and find affordable coverage and care. The updated guide highlights recent legislative and regulatory changes that will affect consumers’ coverage for 2026. While it largely focuses on coverage options and resources in New York State, it also includes information for those living in other states.
- Resource Guide for Theater Artists by IndieSpace (NYC) is a list of resources from hotlines to a list of trusted, affordable providers and insurance coverage.
- Mental Health Grants for NYC-based indie performing artists by IndieSpace. A $500 grant can be used toward therapy, medication, meditation classes, and any other mental health-related costs. Usually, 20 grants are awarded each month.
- Financial assistance at NYU Langone’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries is aimed at making care more accessible to injured artists who cannot pay for treatment themselves.
